CAPITOL Talks 2, exhibition & booklet launch @ HUB A, Casa OAR București
20 October 2017 // 19:00
We are pleased to invite you to an informal discussion about the current needs and opportunities of heritage buildings, developed in partnership with Calup and Teatrul Mic and hosted by HUB A, Casa OAR Bucureşti. At the same time, the CAPITOL 2017 booklet is launched, joined by a new edition of the Cinema / Summer Theatre CAPITOL traveling exhibition.
The guests of the first CAPITOL dialogues series are people whose activity constantly improves the quality of life and space in Bucharest. Their initiatives and projects are at different stages and have distinct approaches, but all relate to the adaptable reactivation of heritage, connected to the needs of today’s society.

Anticipating Friday’s discussions, we have prepared a questionnaire on Bucharest, free time, heritage and Capitol, which we invite you to fill out here: https://goo.gl/DrcNHV [only in RO]
We set out to discover, through this meeting, models of good practice and distinct experiences, specific to each case. Understanding the benefits of rehabilitation is, in some cases, deficient. Decision-makers – national or local authorities, owners, etc. – without a broad perspective, they are discouraged by the precarious, superficial aspect of the buildings proposed for rehabilitation. Adaptive use, linked to current needs, can address these challenges in a sustainable way. The active integration of the heritage through conversion is treated as an opportunity, not only functional and cultural. The benefits of built-in space, showing all ages, have repercussions in all aspects of public life, but also in the inner workings of a society.
The acute need for spaces dedicated to culture is accentuated by the closure of a large number of cultural spaces, especially cinemas, theaters and art galleries, as a result of the 282/2015 law.
The program initiated by Save or Cancel for the promotion of heritage, with an application on the Cinema / Summer Capitol monument, proposes raising awareness among artists, cultural promoters and the community to identify innovative models for adaptable heritage re-use, a democratic, sustainable exercise.
The first conference was held in May 2017 at the CNDB as an informal discussion about the challenges and benefits of heritage reactivation, followed by a #FLUID experimental performance.
The new production of the itinerant exhibition presents the actions and products of the campaign to reactivate the CAPITOL Cinema / Summer Theatre, photos, and works made with the artists and the public involved in the project, along with archive materials.
The Capitol booklet 2017 is a manifesto publication in three dimensions: past, present, and future, and works with processes like nostalgia and imagination. The publication does not intend to be an exhaustive journey into the history of the ensemble or Save or Cancel’s endeavors, but an editorial selection of information and resources designed to activate collective memory and inspire.
